Starting Out with the Scan and Clean Wizard

Figure A.
To begin, double-click the XP Privacy Pro icon from either your desktop or Start Menu.
The first screen you will see after the splash introduction is the screen in figure A.

Looking at Figure A. you will see the window is broken down into two main areas. The area on the left is called the Control Panel. This area lets you navigate through the programs different areas (tabs). You will notice that "Scan and Clean Wizard" is highlighted a bit which means we are in that tab.

Look now to the right side and you see a "Tree" of items here. Each of these items has a checkbox next to it which may or may not be selected. If it is checked; this means that when you click "Sweep Categories" at the bottom, the program will include this item to be scanned.

If an item is checked, it will be included when you sweep and when you destroy.

There are three categories at the top of this window. Basic, Deep, and Custom. The basic scan will not remove any passwords for your protection. This is the default selected option when you start the program.

If you want your categories to be remembered when you close and reopen the program, you must choose Custom Scan Method.

After you have checked the boxes you want to clean, you can click "Sweep Categories" at the bottom and the window will notify you< when it is complete. You can change how you are notified in preferences.

After the sweep is complete, you can either proceed to destroying all of the discovered traces or viewing and ignoring certain items such as usernames and passwords you may want to keep.

Refer to Figure B. for Viewing and Ignoring Traces.

Viewing and Ignoring Traces that have ben discovered.

Figure B.
After you have performed a Sweep operation, you can view each error by clicking the "View and Ignore Traces" tab next to the Wizard tab.
You will see a similar "Tree" as you saw under the wizard, however, there are no checkboxes in this tree. Select a category in the Tree and, if there are traces found, they will be shown in the list at the bottom of the screen. These are all of the traces currently found in the system in the category you selected. If you see a trace that you don't want removed, check the box next to the item and then click "IGNORE". The icon will change and it will show you it has been ignored. The item won't be removed until you manually Unignore the item.

By default, only 300 traces are shown in the list at the bottom. This is to prevent you from accidently listing several thousand items as some categories can product a lot of results. If you want to view more traces at one time, click "View" across the toolbar. You will see a section that says "View ### Traces" ### being 300 by default. A dropdown extends here allowing you to select how many traces to view at once. Typing or selecting 0 here will show ALL traces. Be warned listing several thousand traces at once can be taxing on any system.

Look closely at Figure B. now for where it says "Show All Trace Types" on the right side of the toolbar. This means you are viewing both ignored traces and traces that are ready to be removed. If you click the dropdown button here you will see more options, including a way to view only Ignored errors, or to hide ignored errors. Any item that is not Ignored will be removed during a Destroy operation.

Using the Web Browser Tab

Figure C.
This window, called the Web Browser Tab, scans the same areas as the wizard, this area just allows you to view each category better and is more informative. You can scan here and it will remove the same way as the wizard. If you click "Clear Results" after performing a sweep, only the results from this area are removed. The same is true when you Destroy traces. If you perform the destroy operation from this screen, only the Web Browser categories are destroyed, even if other tabs have results.

Right click anywhere in the list of categories to see more display options

If you hid the statusbar and need to recover it; click Help on the toolbar below Usernames and Passwords.

To quickly view traces that have been found in this category; hold your mouse over a categories number of traces and it will become highlighted like a link. Click and it will take you to that category in the View and Ignore Traces tab.

Using the Windows System Tab

Figure D.
This window, called the Windows System Tab, scans the same areas as the wizard, this area just allows you to view each category better and is more informative. You can scan here and it will remove the same way as the wizard. If you click "Clear Results" after performing a sweep, only the results from this area are removed. The same is true when you Destroy traces. If you perform the destroy operation from this screen, only the Windows System categories are destroyed, even if other tabs have results.

Using the Free Space Shredder

Figure E.
Any type of writable media (except cd/dvd-rw) can be overwritten. Flash media doesn't store data the same way as a hard disk platter so shredding flash media drives isn't necessary.

To begin, click "Select a Drive" and a moment later a listing of ALL available drives are shown. This includes network and removable drives. Select the drive that you wish to shred free space on and click on it. The item is then shown in place of "Select a Drive". You must now click the dropdown arrow to change the drive. If you click on the button and not the down arrow, the drive information will refresh.

After you have selected the drive you wish to shred free space on, you must then choose the number of passes from the Shred Pass Level dropdown. You can leave it at the default also. After you have selected the drive and number of passes you can click "Shred Free Space". This will begin the operation and can be stopped at any time. Due to the way data is stored, resuming this process is not accurate as data is constantly moved and being overwritten. Therefore, you must start over if you start a shred. Stopping the shred does not undo any data already overwritten during the process. During the shred process you can view live information as shown in the list in figure E. Non Windows XP users may see a slightly different screen here as the group features in the list are only in Windows XP and Windows Vista. Holding your mouse over each item explains what each one is or does.
